Walking Around Town
When they're not on wheels, kids get around during the summer by walking. As a result, there are some basic rules that every parent should discuss with their children.
- When crossing the street, look left, right and left again.
- Wait until traffic is clear and then cross.
- Keep looking both ways as you cross the street.
- Use sidewalks or stick as close to the side of the road as possible. When a car is blocking your view of traffic, inch out slowly until you can see into the roadway, then check traffic.
- Cross at corners, when possible. Drivers aren't prepared for people crossing mid-block, and, in some places, you can be ticketed for doing so.
- Don't forget to watch for cars backing out of driveways or exiting from businesses.
- Just because you can see a driver, doesn't mean he can see you.
- If you are walking at night, never do so alone. Wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight.
- Never accept rides from anyone but a parent or a trusted person who knows the family password.
